Pitch Black came out July 17 and it's still the set on shelves. 120 cards, eight rarity tiers, and one card driving most of the pack opening videos: Mega Darkrai ex. If you've pulled one, or you're trying to figure out whether a box is worth the money, here's what the numbers actually say.

How rare is rare

A Special Illustration Rare of some kind lands roughly once every 3 to 4 boxes, that part's normal for this era of sets. Mega Darkrai ex specifically is a different story. Collectors tracking a run of over 750 packs opened only found it once. A separate hunt through 500 packs looking specifically for that card came up with zero. Put together, that puts it somewhere around 1 in 20 to 30 boxes, not per pack.

Worth opening, or worth buying already pulled

At roughly 1 in 20 to 30 boxes for the card everyone wants, opening a single box to chase Mega Darkrai ex is a bet more than a plan. If the SIR itself is the goal, buying the pulled card outright is usually the cheaper and faster way to get it. If the fun is in opening packs, the full art and Chandelure still make most boxes worth breaking.
