The fi-8170 is a duplex scanner: two image sensors, one on each side of the paper path, so a card goes through the feeder once and comes out with front and back both captured. Rated at up to 70 pages a minute, that's 140 images a minute once both sides are counted separately.
Why single-pass duplex matters for cards specifically
A simplex scanner needs the card flipped and fed again for the back, doubling the handling for every card in a batch and doubling the chance of a jam or a misfeed.
