Selling bulk yourself, rather than as a step toward becoming a seller, comes down to trading speed for price. The faster and more convenient the option, the less of the real value it tends to pay.

Why a local game store pays the least

An LGS has to resell what it buys at a markup to stay open, so its buy price bakes in that margin from the start. What it offers in exchange is genuinely valuable for a small amount of cards: no listing, no shipping, no waiting, cash or credit on the spot. For a shoebox someone wants gone today, that trade-off is often worth it even at the lower payout.

Why direct sales usually pay more

Selling directly to another collector or a reseller, through a local buy-sell-trade group (the same approach covered in how to sell Pokémon bulk step by step for sourcing), cuts out the store's margin entirely. It takes more effort: posting, negotiating, meeting up or shipping, and there's more trust required on both sides. For a bulk lot big enough to be worth that effort, it's usually the better payout of the three.

Where conventions and card shows fit

Good for moving a large lot in one sitting to someone who can write a check on the spot, similar in spirit to why bigger collections command better percentages (see buying collections at 70%): fewer buyers who can move that much volume at once means less price pressure than trying to offload the same lot in small pieces to lots of small buyers.

The actual decision

Selling it all at once, to whoever's easiest, usually means leaving real money on the table, the same value gap covered in how much is my bulk worth. Selling it yourself, sorted and listed, gets the most of that value but takes real time and, eventually, starts looking less like selling a collection and more like running a small version of the business covered throughout this Playbook.
